Sir (2018) Movie Review
Ratna, a house maid confronts her master (Sir) who often
remains quiet and depressed due to a past event telling him to not to lose hope
and that life does not stop. Keeping a beautiful smile on her face she doesn't
flinch once when she unwraps her ill fated past in front of him. Sir is a
subtle yet beautiful take on an unorthodox relationship between a maid and her
master. The class structure engraved in our society makes the duo drift apart
even though understanding each other just with silence.
Ratna is a dreamer, fighter and an achiever who is also
independent and performs her responsibilities duly. She wants to learn
tailoring not just to get her hand on the trade but to be a fashion designer. A
dream- miniscule of people coming from a lower class of society hardly ever
dreamt, Ratna’s dreams and aspirations seem substantial but she is stoic and
complacent.
Ashwin is a soft-spoken person who retaliates back with
his kith and kins when someone ridicules his maid. The aspiring writer is
forced to leave back his interest and forced to take his architect
profession.
When these two come on screen I feel that subtle nudge
towards their chemistry. An unorthodox love story which stands strong is afraid
to be judged by society. A beautifully written and directed movie by Rohena
Gera, with equally brilliant performances by Tillotama Shome and Vivek Gomber.
We can feel the two worlds juxtaposed in a single room where serving trays and
working laptops hint at a clear class difference between the two leads.
Sir is a beautiful tale of hopes, dreams, attraction, of
loneliness and more than all it is a movie about selfless and boundless LOVE.
